Germany Etiquette and Rules to Make Your Visit Pleasant

Over at Black Forest Tours we have a related post that seems to be very popular called “German Attitudes and Culture“. That post will give you a nice well-rounded introduction to some things that may surprise you (and some are very funny too) upon your first visit to Germany. But there is so much more to know if you want to have a pleasant trip.

Rules

#6 in that post is “Germans like their rules”. We want to explore this a bit further because “the rules” are not necessarily explicit – they are often not written down. So as a tourist, you will, absolutely, one day, find yourself is a jam because you didn’t know “the rule” for something. We’ll explain some of those here, but before we do, let us encourage you to buy our tours. They will save you much frustration, time, and.$.money. With each tour you receive excruciatingly detailed explanations about things you need to know that make all the difference on your trip here in Germany. You may miss your train or get on the wrong train simply because you didn’t know! You will not get served dinner, because you didn’t know! (Going to bed hungry is no fun)

Food, Dinner, Grocery stores

What surprises especially Americans (who live in a 24/7 culture), nothing in Germany is open on Sundays. Only restaurants and biergartens may be open. In big cities you won’t notice this so much, but in small villages, you are out of luck – nothing will be open. In certain towns that are popular with tourists, like our town of Freiburg, you won’t get a seat until late in the evening if at all because the locals will already have made reservations at their favorite restaurant. In our tour guides we always explain these things, depending where you are, so that you will always enjoy a meal in a nice place at a reasonable hour.

Language, not just German

Keep in mind that Germany has very different regional cultures. Since we are located in the south-western corner of Germany in the state of Baden-Württemberg (two older states that were merged after World War II), even Baden (south) is culturally different from Württemberg (north). The Black Forest is mostly located in Baden. Standard German, or High-German as it is called, is spoken in the area of Hanover. It might surprise you to know that people from our area, who speak Badish, do not understand Germans from the southeast corner of Germany (Munich), who speak Bavarian. That’s right! The dialects are really that different. Its not at all similar to English, where Americans understand Australians and British without too much difficulty. So even if you have your little Rick Steves phrase book, you may not understand one word spoken to you in their local tongue. Be prepared. Buy our tour guides!

But you should at least try to speak German! It will pay off. Nothing will get you on the wrong side of a German faster than rattling off a question in your English slang “wat kinda beers you guys got?”. Im not making that one up. (and be sure say it really fast so that your server is twice as irritated) I’ve heard this spoken and I’ve seen the reaction. Yes your server may “get” what just came out of your mouth, but they are almost sure to offer you something you won’t like or don’t want – and they won’t take it back – and you’ll be lucky if they return to your table in the next hour no matter what kind of crazy hand signals you employ. That’s the price of being insensitive and unprepared on your travels. Our guides will often explain the best way to ask for things you would like and therefore produce the desired outcome.

#10 from our other post bears repeating here; German Service

German servers are not prompt. Eating and drinking are done in slow-motion here. Its just how it is in Germany. 99% of the time you imagine its because they know you are a foreigner. Now you may sit down in a gasthaus and never get service, but that is for a reason. You can avoid unpleasantries by waiting to be seated. Biergartens are the exception – anything goes in a biergarten. But otherwise if you have to take a seat without a server guiding you to one, always-always sit at a table with tablecloth and utensils. The table without these is not to be used or its a table reserved for locals; called a Stammtisch (it may have a lamp above it decorated with hunting paraphernalia). Sitting at the Stammtisch (table) will brand you as a dumb tourist and the server will not likely serve you.

Now if you are the masochistic type, you should visit Koln (Cologne), and have a Kolsch beer there (which is a famous beer only made in Koln). The servers in Koln are notoriously unfriendly. Its almost like a competition to see who can be the worst server – until they get drunk and then they are the nicest people you can meet. Which is to say, Germans are actually warm and fun-loving people. Just get to know the rules and you’ll experience this first-hand. Buy our tour guides! They are cheap insurance against getting on the wrong side of things.

Touring Neuschwanstein (Füssen)

If you are thinking about coming to Germany to see Neuschwanstein Castle, you are not alone. In fact Neuschwanstein Castle is the single most popular tourist destination in Germany. Chances are also good that you’ll do some research online (hopefully you will read my blog after stumbling upon it). Now if you didn’t stumble upon this blog, you would probably think like every other tourist – I’ll stay in Fussen because its close to the castle – or maybe Munich because its the biggest nearby city.

Fairy Tale Castle Neuschwanstein
Fairy Tale Castle Neuschwanstein

But luckily you found my blog and I can help you make better choices. So let me make some general suggestions and observations that will certainly help make your visit better.

  • This is my reviews of the guidebooks people typically buy for visiting Neuschwanstein/Füssen

Lonely Planets Germany, Austria, Switzerland Best Trips ( 33 Amazing Road Trips ) is currently a big hit. But NOT amazing. Sadly it is very shallow. It will tell you a few of the obvious highlights you already know of – it tells you they are there! Wow! Missing is the how-to. Well if you need a book to read instead of watching a documentary on TV on a cold winter night, to fantasize about your summer vacation, then that’s up to you.

Rick Steve’s Germany (Austria and Switzerland) guidebooks are more interesting, detailed and worthwhile. If you already have a Rick Steve’s book (which I recommend), then you are probably the type that likes to tour on your own, independent of the crowds. Then why not augment it with the details and hidden gems you’ll find only in my Neuschwanstein Black Forest Road Trip Tour. Its perfect for the independent traveler and a perfect complement to Steve’s guidebooks.

  • Tours of Castles in Germany

castle Black ForestNeuschwanstein is unique in many ways; it was never used as a fortress, it was King Ludwig’s private palace built in the 1800s – which is pretty recent in castle terms. Neuschwanstein is the real-life inspiration for Disney’s Snow White Castle. Its no surprise its a favorite tour destination. However, many other castles and castle ruins can be found on almost every mountaintop in Germany. These castles served some sort of fortification function. Most were originally constructed beginning in the 1200’s and have long sordid histories with colorful owner’s names like Jeorg der Borse ( George the Evil ) – think Lord of the Rings rather than Snow White. I recommend that you don’t overlook the many really interesting historic castles that dot the German countryside. My Neuschwanstein Black Forest Tour will also take you to some of those interesting castles.

My Neuschwanstein Black Forest Road Trip Tour is not a tour of the Neuschwanstein Castle! My tour is a road trip tour of the surrounding countryside – the best way to see the Neuschwanstein/Füssen area. Read about my Neuschwanstein Black Forest Tour at the link so you know that I show you everything in between Lake Constance to the west and Füssen in the east.

cows are typical for the Black ForestIn between these locations lies the Algau or Bavarian Alps. Its an area that you will think came right out of a movie, with fantastic green valley’s, lakes and farmhouses with cattle grazing, and with breweries and cheese shops in almost every town, all surrounded by those amazing Alps. You gotta see it and taste it to believe it.

  • Tips

You can skip Füssen. Its a rather bland and over-touristed town that is well suited for the young backpacker and bus tour. There are dozens of better towns to visit and/or stay in the area.

If you have a day or more in the area and want to see it all in the Bavarian Alps surrounding Neuschwanstein Castle. You found it!black forest day tour

English Language German Clock Museum Tours

Take our English language tour of what is considered Europe’s best clock museum. The German Clock Museum by car or by train documents how beginning in the dark ages, farmers of the area, with little to do during the long winters, took-up clock making, which ultimately established the area as the birthplace of the Cuckoo Clock.

The German Clock Museum traces the development of clocks from Medieval times to the state-of-the-art today. If your interest is peaked, then this is a tour you should not miss – one of my favorites – and my customers subsequently agree.

Mainau

The Island of Mainau, also known as the Island of Flowers is located in the middle of Lake Constance. The almost tropical island is 6 km (4 miles) north of the town of Constance. Due to its mild climate there are orange trees and palm trees which grow year-round. The gardens and parks of Island Mainau are known all over the world for their beauty and can be visited by the public year-round. You can either take a boat ride over to the island or walk over the foot bridge. Unfortunately you cannot spend a night at the island since overnight stays are not allowed. But closeby there are many hotels, for example in the towns of Constance or Meersburg. There is also a castle situated in the center of this island.

Titisee in the Black Forest

Titisee is the largest naturally formed lake in the Black Forest. It is also home of the town called Titisee. Titisee has a population of 2,000. Due to the fact that Tittisee is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the Black Forest the population triples in size in summer. Sometimes there are more than 6,000 people through town. The map of Tittisee shows you where the lake is located.

Tittisee

If you look at pictures of Tittisee you will soon discover that it is a very small take indeed. It will only take you about 90 minutes to walk around the entire lake. Some of the best Black Forest cake in the area is being served at Lake Titisee. If you are traveling on one of our Black Forest Tours we will make sure to point out where to stop for a piece of cake! There is also plenty of opportunity to shop for cuckoo clocks at the lake. In summer you can take a boat ride across the lake and enjoy this big Black Forest attraction.

Things to do in Baden-Baden

Baden-Baden is located at the northern end of the Black Forest in Germany. Europe’s first luxury hotel was opened in Baden-Baden and since then the town has been a destination for celebrities and the wealthy. That is because Baden-Baden was once the hotspot in Europe in the 19th century. Anyone who wanted to be someone had to be in Baden-Baden.  In the 19th century Baden-Baden was the most elegant and sophisticated playground in Europe, the Saint Tropez of high society. Visitors can enjoy The Casino Baden-Baden or spend hours at one of the famous spas in Baden-Baden. The Baden-Baden baths are called Caracalla and Friedrichsbad.

Baden-Baden has a population of about 55,000 people. There are numerous hot springs in the Black Forest around which spa towns have grown, but non of them have become as famous as Baden-Baden.

Meersburg

Meersburg is located on the Germany side of Lake Constance and one of the most charming towns at Lake Constance. The medieval city is a dream for any pedestrian- there are no cars allowed inside the old town. The name Meersburg literally means “Burg on the Lake”. The ‘Burg’ is referring to the castle which was built here in 630 and now overlooking Lake Constance.

If you look at pictures of Meersburg you can see the the town is a must-see destination at Lake Constance. A ferry takes you and your car across to Konstanz every 15 minutes. Lake constance

If you have a few days to spend in the Black Forest a visit to Lake Constance is highly recommended. Lake Constance is a lake only a short drive from the Black Forest. If you look at a map of Lake Constance  you will discover that the lake is bordered by the countries of Germany, Switzerland and Austria. A boat ride to all 3 countries is a must-do when visiting. More than half of the shoreline of Lake Constance is in Germany though so it makes sense to start your journey coming from the Black Forest. Lake Constance is 15 km long (9 miles) wide at its widest point, 74 km (46 miles) long, 252 m deep (826 feet) and 395 m (1,295 ft) high. The area around Lake Constance is known for its mild climate and hills around the lake are covered with vineyards. There are almost 200 professional fishermen active today. If you have a chance to enjoy lunch or dinner at Lake Constance enjoy some of the fish which is on the menu of just about any restaurant.

Black Forest Travel Guide

A written Black Forest Travel Guide is difficult to find. Most travel books encompass all of Germany, only mentioning a few sentences about the Black Forest. The Black Forest of Germany is a popular travel destination for German and European visitors and therefore most of the information available to visitors is written in German or another European language. There are travel books like Rick Steves’ Travel Guide to Germany. But Rick Steves, after all, is a tourist as well. His knowledge and understanding of the Black Forest is limited to his own experience, not what you would get directly from a local. If you want to travel like a local – we are the locals.

Over the years we have compiled all our experiences into one compact Black Forest Travel Guidebook. With each purchase of one of our Black Forest tours you will be receiving a complimentary copy of the ‘Feel at Home in the Black Forest’ travel guide. Different sections will explain the local food to you, the local traditions and customs. With our guide you can confidently travel in the Black Forest.

Black Forest by Train

Interested in exploring the Black Forest by Train? Our experience shows that is quite difficult to figure out what trains and busses to take through the Black Forest. In many cities like Munich or Berlin you have a hop-on-hop-off bus showing you all the attractions. But there is no bus tour in English you can hop on to see all the Black Forest attractions. Many guidebooks talking about the Black Forest are in German only. And the train system is somewhat difficult to figure out. We created several Black Forest itineraries which take you through different parts of the Black Forest showing you many of the must-see attractions. Hop on the Black Forest Railway for a scenic ride. We point out where to shop for a cuckoo clock, where to eat a piece of Black Forest cake or where that Black Forest restaurant is located all the locals talk about. When you purchase one of our all-day tours you can be assured that you have plenty of details on what trains to take, what stops to get off and where to change to another train or bus. Explore the Black Forest by train and bus with our help! See you soon in the Black Forest!

Black Forest Cuckoo Clocks

The Black Forest Germany is known for many things…Black Forest Cake, Black Forest Ham, Black Forest mountains and many more….one of the main reason many people plan a Black Forest holiday is to buy one of many Black Forest Cuckoo Clocks. In the Central Black Forest you find many villages and towns which are famous for their Cuckoo Clock making.

black-forest-cuckoo-clock

There are tons of shops which sell Cuckoo Clocks in all sizes and shapes. Also in all kinds of price categories! You can buy an imported cuckoo clock from Taiwan starting at a few Euros. But if you  want a 100% authentic Cuckoo Clock you will need to put more money onto the table. They start at about 100 Euros and can go up into the thousands. Sometimes you can arrange for a cuckoo clock factory visit and have the opportunity to see how a cuckoo clock is actually being put together. There are only a few cuckoo clock factories left in the Black Forest and it’s not easy to schedule a visit. But sometimes you get lucky. If you don’t care about the cuckoo clock manufacturing and are more interested in just shopping for a Black Forest souvenir browse through some of the many shops in the Black Forest. Or stop by at world’s largest cuckoo clock which is also located in the Black Forest. Some of our self-guided Black Forest tours plan on a stop in cuckoo clock land. No matter if you take the train or car you will have a chance to stop in some of the towns and purchase your perfect clock. See you soon in the Black Forest!
